Help for Authors and Writers

How to Stay Motivated.

How do you find the energy to keep at it?

A lot of folks, and boy do I mean a lot, ask how to keep motivated through the long, arduous process of writing and re-writing a novel. And to be honest, I'm not sure how helpful this is, but I’ve found that there is no secret to being motivated as a writer.

Wanna know the secret to being a writer?

You can’t not write. You’re driven to write. Writing is the only thing that allows you any peace whatsoever from the brain weasels.

Oh, God, the brain weasels.

As I write this, I spent last weekend in hospital with a GI bleed, and what did I do while I was there? I wrote. Seriously.

Most people would consider “in hospital bleeding from both ends” an excuse not to work. When you’re a writer? “Oh good, I can’t get out of bed, and someone else brings me food, so I can focus on writing!”

Every professional writer I know personally is incapable of not writing. We are compelled to write. It doesn’t require motivation—just the opposite! Not writing is like not breathing.
